    AMATEUR TATTOOS:
In most cases, these are the easiest to remove and this can be accomplished with the least number of treatments. Exceptions are those cases in which the ink has been deposited in the sub-cutaneous tissue. In these instances more treatments may be necessary, however, the depth of penetration of laser light at the 1064nm wavelength is helpful. Most amateur tattoos are removed with 3 to 5 treatments but the patient should always be advised that pocket areas might require more treatments.

    PROFESSIONAL TATTOOS:
The majority of professional tattoos have an even distribution of ink with an even depth of placement. Most of the ink is in the dermis with little in the sub cutaneous tissue. The quantity of ink used is greater, therefore, the number of treatments ranges from 4 to 6 with some patients (about 10%) requiring, 8 or even 9 treatments. Professional tattoos may also include a greater number of colors.

    COSMETIC TATTOS:
Cosmetic tattoos such as lip liner and brows are, in many instances, made of iron based inks. A test spot must always be done to determine whether or not the tattoo ink will oxidize and thus blacken. An oxidized tattoo can be treated but may take 4 to 6 treatments. Protective eye shields must be used in the eyes and must be fully occlusive. Extreme care and caution must always be exercised when treating near the eyes.
